“You have changed the way I see the world around me…” This profoundly humbling response from a friend, after showing him a simple photo I had taken of the sun, perfectly sums up my passion for photography.
My name is Barbara Seegers and I am a 41 year old photographer living in Newcastle, Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa. I am the mother of two incredible humans who inspired me to start my journey with photography many years ago, and what a wonderful journey of growth and discovery it has been!
My photography journey started to get really exciting after I Joined Gurushots. I wanted to see what other photographers were doing and also start sharing some of my work with a wider audience. Then, one day, I received a notification that I would be included in an exhibition in Athens, Greece. Since then, my work has been included in many exhibitions across the globe – Germany, Spain, Australia, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, England, the USA, Romania, Scotland, Canada, Sweden…and of course, my very own home country of South Africa. Seeing other’s work and learning to tackle so many different facets of photography and techniques myself has pushed me to become better and encouraged me to try different things.
Simple beauty is what inspires me, and I love taking photos that capture a unique perspective. My hope for every photo I take is that by sharing these unique perspectives, I might ignite within others the willingness to stop and see the magical in the seemingly mundane. Life is hard enough as it is, and helping others open their minds to the beauty surrounding them – simple beauty hiding in plain sight – gives me immense satisfaction and joy.
Instead of focussing on producing a great composite image, I enjoy the challenge of taking an original photo. A special interested of mine is images in black and white, specifically because the image needs to be great to start with. Editing to black and white should only add to the photo and not hide any flaws.
I have always enjoyed looking at life from every conceivable angle, and my photography is no different. I hope that in viewing my work you may discover something new and wonderful, some undiscovered magic in the world around you.
